Appwords

Appwords is an educational quiz game where players test their vocabulary, spelling, and grammar under time pressure. Each round lasts 30 seconds, rewarding quick and accurate answers.

Players earn coins for correct answers, which can be exchanged for lifelines to give them an edge during tough questions. 

Categories

Vocabulary

• A word in a sentence is highlighted.

• Choose the correct synonym from 4 options.

• After answering, the correct definition is displayed.

Spelling

• A word is presented in phonetic spelling inside a sentence.

• Players type the correct spelling.

• A “Say it!” button uses Google TTS for audio clues.

Grammar

• Fill in the missing word in a sentence.

• Choose from 4 options (e.g., “What ___ you eat yesterday?” → did).

Lifelines

Players can spend coins to use lifelines: 

• 2x – Answer twice. 

• Skip – Skip a difficult question. 

• Bomb –Eliminate 2 wrong options. 

• +10 Seconds – Extra time for spelling rounds.

Background

English is widely used in subjects like Science and Math in the Philippines, yet many students struggle with proficiency, which can affect their learning in other areas.

Appwords was developed as a thesis project to address this issue by turning English practice into a fun, engaging game.
